Road safety learning is for everyone — every day, on every road.
If your vehicle breaks down or you are involved in an accident on a motorway, your safety becomes the top priority. Knowing what to do while waiting for emergency help can prevent further accidents and protect lives.
Switch on your hazard lights to warn approaching vehicles that your car is stationary or facing a problem.
If the vehicle is still moving, carefully move it to the left side (hard shoulder). Never stop in the middle or fast lane.
If traffic is heavy, exit the vehicle from the passenger side and move away from the road.
Move at least 50–100 meters away from the vehicle and preferably stand behind a safety barrier or guardrail.
Standing directly behind your car is dangerous. If another vehicle hits your car, it can push it forward.
If available, place a reflective warning triangle 50–100 meters behind your vehicle to alert drivers.
Wear a reflective jacket if possible and use your mobile flashlight to stay visible.
Call 130 (Motorway Police) or 1122 (Rescue) and clearly share your location (route number, direction, nearest interchange or kilometer marker).
Remember: Your life is more important than your vehicle.
If you are in a safe hard shoulder area, you may stay inside with seatbelt fastened. Otherwise, move away from traffic.
Stand at least 50–100 meters away from the road and preferably behind a barrier.
Call 130 for motorway police or 1122 for medical rescue.
